If all of your favourites are UU (underused, a midtier of sorts, I guess), you don't have to worry about being clowned by OU (overused, a higher tier) teams because you would typically only battle other UU teams with your UU team. If you have even one OU mon though, you're going up against OU teams no matter how shit the rest of your team is.
You can afford to dip down a tier though if you want and probably not suffer too much. There are Pokemon who are considered UU but have applications in OU, and if a UU pokemon you like works better with your team than an OU pokemon that fills the same niche but better, I don't think it would be that bad to use the UU option.
Fairy pokemon are fairly good.
