She disobeyed the police and fought for Dragonite when no one else believed in it. She was the one by its side in its time of need. And even when she did get it, it had serious behavior issues and didn't listen to her most of the time at first.
It's a pretty interesting take, and it was handled much better than Dawn getting a Togekiss just because.

Iris has been shown to be great with dragons. (ie, the wild Druddigon from a flashback, calming down her lesbian friend's Hydreigon, taking care of that trainer's Deino, taming Dragonite a bit, etc.) It's just that her personality is more prominent than these traits.
