It makes sense on a physical level. A bird has to flap its wings VERY hard to hover in place. The more lateral speed they have, the less they need to flap to maintain lift. Have you ever noticed how much birds flap when they take off and land? This is the only hovering animation that looks like it's actually going through the correct motions to hover.
tl;dr I'm a bird expert, and you are objectively wrong.
