I skipped many trainers in XY in my EXP playthough, hell even skipped entire routes, used at least 11 in my playthrough, and never grinded any of them up to level before starting a new route, and i STILL was at least a level or two above the E4 out side of one of my Pokes..
But you're right about XY being shit for a level curve without the EXP share or any EXP boosters, and it really starts to show after the 3rd gym (which also is where the pacing goes to complete shit). I was a good 8-10+ levels lower than Olympia's acemon (which is at level 48) When I finally got up to the E4, my Pokemon's average was barely 50, with a good amount of them being level 47 or 48.
