Did they improve the Fairy type in Gen 7?

Most the Fairy designs they introduced in Gen 6 were just too girly or feminine with no consistent theme. This time, we got:

>Primarina
>Cutiefly, Ribombee
>Comfey
>Morelull, Morelull2
>Mimikyu
>Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini
>Magearna
>Alolan Ninetales

It looks to me like they better centered it around folklore and mythical creatures (especially the Tapu line and Comfey). Do you agree? Thoughts?

Absolutely they're doing better this time around, they got over just making a bunch of pink fluffy friends.

Ribombee, A-tales, and Morelull2 specifically are some of the coolest Fairy-types to date imo

You can see how they changed direction in the attack animations too.

Moonblast used to be a pink shot of light, but now it's just a ball of white light in the most recent trailer. They're diverting from the pink aesthetic.

Primarina will be UU at least due to its typing alone.
Ribombee is PU as is Comfey.
Morelull2 could be good, could be meh/bad.
If Mimikyu has moves to set up like spikes, screens or boosting moves and some decent stats, it will be UU material.
Tapu Koko's stats and moves will make or break it.
Tapu Lele will be OU or even Uber based on its ability alone.
Tapu Bulu will be at least UU as if it has leftovers, it can recover 1/8th of its HP every turn. A set with Bulk Up, Horn Leech, Play Rough and Protect/Earthquake could be amazing.
Tapu Fini will be OU.
Magearna could go to Uber or OU
Alolan Ninetales will be RU or NU.

Also if Togekiss finally gets Moonblast, it will be better than Clefable.

Most of Gen VI's fairies followed a pretty consistent theme other than Xerneas, Diancie, and the Jigglypuff line if you bothered to do your research. Gen VII is way more all over the place.

They just made the Fairy type even more fucking inconsistent than it was in Gen 6. It is literally THE most unthemed type in the entire franchise. What makes a Fairy type? Absolutely fucking nothing. Dedenne is a Fairy type just because it's cute. Mr. Mime is a Fairy type just because it's pink. Mawile is a Fairy type just because it's based on a myth (like 50% of all Pokémon are). Gardevoir is a Fairy type just because it's girly and feminine. Xerneas is a Fairy type because it's magical. The Tapus are Fairy type because they protect nature (like 99% of all Grass types, almost every single other Legendary in existence, and especially Zygarde, a fucking DRAGON type). The Fairy type is a fucking mess. None of these Pokémon have ANYTHING in common. At all.

Dedenne is the only Fairy thats just cute though. Mr Mime has design elements of elves and jesters. Gardevior was originally intended as a guardian angel figure. Even if Mawile is folklore inspired its still a non villanous being with a sinister side like traditional fairies do. Xerneas is a nature deity you fuckwit. Its original form is a goddamn tree. You do realize fairies are HEAVILY associated with nature without being plants themselves right? Its just like Rock being thematically comparable with Ground.

Actually, the fairy type there can be explained as they are based on Teru Teru Bozus. Mixed with wizard.
Remember Gen3 is the "weather gen".
And Teru Teru Bozus "control" the weather with magic.
Like a wizard (psychic).
Like a sprite (fairy).

At least being cutsey, girly, or feminine was a consistent theme. Now they just give types to whatever. Owl? Ghost-type. Ninetales reskin? Part Fairy even though the original Ninetales wasn't retyped.

Gen 6's fairies had three central themes:

1) The Pokemon was listed as a Fairy in a prior generation, or have a design that references certain aspects about Fairies - Clefable and Granbull lines

2) The Pokemon uses trickery and deception - Mr. Mime, Mawile, Whimsicott, and Klefki lines

3) The Pokemon is feminine in appearance or uses feminine tropes (cuteness, beauty, majesty) - Wigglytuff, Togekiss, Azumarill, Gardevoir, Florges, Aromatisse, Slurpuff, Dedenne, Carbink, Xerneas, and Diancie lines, as well as Mega Altaria and Mega Audino

1) and 2) are obvious. 3) is supported by Fairy-type moves, except for Klefki's signature moves (since Klefki falls into the second category), being categorized as either Beauty or Cuteness in ORAS' Super Contests.

We can also fit the Fairies into these molds as well.

Primarina, Comfey, the Ribombee line, Magearna, and Alolan Ninetales all fit under (3). The four Guardian Deities and Mimikyu fit under (2).

Morelull and its evolution are a bit trickier, but I would assume that since these Pokémon are based on "fairy ring mushrooms", they would fit most under (1).

Gen 6 fairies were more in line of what I think of when I think of fairies.
Michevious little critters with quirky designs. Kelfki for example is just a little fairy who floats around abandoned places, gathering keys.

As for mythology, Azumarill is an easter bunny, Gardivoir is an imaginary friend/guardian angel, Togetic is like your basic fairy (I named my Tinkerbell when silver came out) and Mawhile is a Japanese folklore creature too.
If I did some research, I might be able to find out how the other ones relate.

Not really sure how the Gen 7 mons stack up yet as actual fairies. Time will tell.

The Tapus are the most "traditional" fairies in the series by far. They're stated to be guardians that don't even act like guardians at all. Its perfect.
