They aren't 'overdesigned' (that's not even a word with any real meaning), they actually have designs
Gen 1 and 2 were objectively the worst gens design wise, either you had shitty bland animals like Dewgong, Ekans, and Noctowl, or copypasted dinosaurs/pink blobs
