Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think we can't design brand new genes, and even if we can, since genes interact in the most complicated way, it makes things a bit much too unpredictable.
Kinda like the "spots" gene in dalmation dogs makes them deaf. That kind of genetic bullshit.
But I am no genetics fag myself, so you probably know more.
