To make us speculate what the hell they are.
I mean you have bizzare creatures that resemble important characters in the story and seem to come out of portals. Until we know the whole truth we only know they have resemblence to people, are highly dangerous and can be caught. That's it, other than that we can figure out ourselves what they might be and what role they play in the story.
