Financially speaking, I thought BW were the big flops, which would explain why newer games are full of oldfag pandering, because BW was dedicated on being a completely new experience without any old Pokemon appearing whatsoever.
I guess one thing I will say in favor of single stage Pokemon is that it allows gen 7 to technically have more separate species of Pokemon than gen 6. Like sure, things like Turtonator, Drampa, Oranguru, and Passimian seem like they would have all had prevos, but if they did, maybe some of the other single stage Pokemon that now exist would have gotten shafted in favor of those prevos. Although I personally love evolution lines for the way the create a "family" of Pokemon, and add a sense of growth to raising a Pokemon, I can understand the desire to have diversity while simultaneously keeping the dex numbers lower in favor of finetuning 3D animations and allocating workload to other parts of the game.
