It went uphill from HGSS. BW and B2W2 were absolutely amazing. But they didn't sell, so because of this Game Freak made XY with an entirely different (and terrible) approach. And it seems they've roughly continued the same formula with SM, sadly.

Alolan forms weren't used to their full potential and the amount of good megas exceed the amount of good Alola forms.

ORAS had more famous trainers and they were actually relevant to the story. For a game supposed to celebrate the 20 year anniversity of the franchise, having only 9 famous trainers, 4 literal whos, is an outrage.
