Gladion acts as a rival throughout the game. He's not even a Team Skull member, just a hired help. One of his lines after the last main story battle is something like "I know we aren't friends, but we're not enemies either", while Hau is always considered a friend.

His music theme is also called "vs_rival" in the game files, while Hau is "vs_friend"

Hope it won't delve into MCs pairing again like BW and BW2 while ignore all other rival/NPC. I will be really disappointed if the author is dumb enough to pair Sun and Chicken-chan and wrote off Lillie.
Manga love edgelord rival though (Green,Silver) so Gladion probably got Chicken-chan if anyone except Sun would. Hau is too similar to Shauna/Bianca so he would be likely to get btfo the most. (I think Shauna's role as love interest was removed and got paired with Tierno instead in the manga)

Also, I don't know how pathetic Hau is just yet, but I honestly felt bad breaking Calem/Serena's spirit over the course of the game. Gamefreak doesn't seem to want NPCs to do anything other than suck your dick. After 20 years, Barry and Blue are still the only rivals who actually feel like they're actively trying to compete with you. Cheren comes close but he concedes too easily with each loss.

As someone with the .cia, Hau is an XY/ORAS character in a game where the characters are SLIGHTLY more diverse (by Pokemon standards), thus it feels like he's extremely one-dimensional compared to everyone else to the point that he's being shit on for it. At least Calem/Serena find their own resolve by the time you get to Kiloude.
