>Lillie is a Mary sueKukui takes her in because he's a nice dude and knows Lusamine is going fucking insane.
Hau likes her because she's a cute girl.
She doesn't do anything amazing and actively avoids battling because she's a little bitch.
>Hau is your typical annoying comic reliefIf you paid attention, Kukui and Lillie actually make surprisingly self-aware comments about how dopey he acts. They really tried to subvert the rivals from Gen VI and he does a good job at being funny without being annoying.
>All the trial captains are shallow plot devicesThey have more plot involvement than any of the gym leaders except for Gen V, showing up several times outside of their challenges. They also actually have personality, Lana actively makes fun of you if you answer her questions like a retard and Sophocles also fucks with you and acts like a genuinely smart kid.
>Gladion is an edgy faggot who receives zero character developmentHis mom is insane and the writers poke fun with his edginess. Talking to him in the motel is a pretty neat moment. The only annoying part of Gladion is his "muh partner" dynamic with Type: Null.
>Main villain is evil for no reasonIt's the classic "lust for power" trope, sure, but she's clearly not evil for "no reason".
>and the protag is Mary sue mk 2What the fuck does this mean? It's a Pokemon game, the protagonist is a generic self-insert avatar just like every other Pokemon game.
Sun and Moon are definitely overwhelming gameplay-wise, but saying the writing is bad--especially compared to other Pokemon games--is just proving you didn't play the game. There's a ton of little subtleties and the story has the most depth besides Gen V.
