Yeah he was a little hard for me too. The only move I had to hit him SE with was Cutiefly's Absorb, and Wingull was my only water resistance.

It depends entirely on if you brought the right pokemon/z-move, or if it summons the harder one of its possible adds

I dropped wishiwashi in two sparks from charjabug, and it only summoned a school-less wishiwashi that was a non-issue

Then totem mimikyu later on summoned a gengar that almost one shotted my decidueye before I could one shot it in return

I think it largely depends on what the Pokemon summons. The Wishiwashi usually summons healbot Alomola that spam heal pulse and refresh. The Mimikyu just summoned a harmless Haunter for me that liked to spam Hypnosis.

Yeah, the Totems 2-4 were arguably the hardest fights in my opinion, getting harder with each fight:
>Heal Pulse Alomamola + Sitrus Berry Wishiwashi
>Toxic Salandit + Venoshock Sp.Atk Berry Salazzle Both faster than everything I had at that point
>Sunny Day Castform or Screech Supersonic Trumbeak + White Herb Solar Blade Lurantis

But you could tell they only made them this hard cause they're weak to the previous Z-Crystal you were given so you could plan to rush them down with Z-Power.

Play Rough Mimikyu could've been horrible though if I let the Haunters do their thing.

I had to use a max revive on Fuzzy the Cutiefly after it got tagteamed by Castform Lurantis and later a Trumbeak.
My Magnemite TW them and got hit by a critical fire type Weather Ball.
Brionne locked the totem into growl and Z-nuked the Trumbeak that summoned after Castform.
Then I spammed Strugglebug.

The only reason lurantis gave me any trouble at all was because I didn't grind for flame burst and z-ember just barely missed the OHKO, then it started spamming synthesis and dragged the whole thing out

Low level/minimum grind run of this game with no Z moves is pretty challenging.
It's hard to build a solid team almost intentionally in the first two islands. Most Pokemon are baby ones so dragging something like Pichu around to evolve it makes it even harder.

I only beat totem wishiwoshi because I chose the grass starter and gave it a scope lens.

I'm not even level 20 yet. Only like 17-19.

That's what I did anyway. Can probably use any starter so long as your attack is good enough to deal decent damage with fire. Main thing is dealing just enough damage for Lurantis to not heal and waiting for Sunny Day before using the z-move.

With no exp share Magnemite walled the first totems. I don't think they dropped me below 50% hp.
I hear good things about Diglett as well, but in my experience it's not that bad. I've even been avoiding trainers.

Wishiwashi is fought in the rain, uses Soak to cancel your STAB attacks, and summons Alomomola to heal the boss.

Not nuzlocking but played through the game and I can say the difficulty increased quite a bit. Most of the time I had to use items like a madman to not Black out. I suppose XY and ORAS spoiled me with its toddler friendly difficulty

Yeah, I'm actually legit impressed that there's a bit of a challenge in some fights.

I'm not using exp share but the Pokemon Refresh exp boost is enough to keep me on par with everything. But those totem fights are legit.

These games would probably be terrible to nuzzlocke. On top of the abundant cutscenes, it's really hard to come out of a totem fight or even a Kahuna fight without at least 1 faint.

I'm so glad I decided to cancel my no exp share nuzlocke 1 day before it leaked.

Lurantis wiped 4/6 of my team, I thought my Growlithe with the Z-crystal Fire Fang would eat his face instantly, but the bastard summoned Castform and started healing back to full faster than I could damage him, and Solar Blade was powerful enough to wreck my Growlithe even through 0.5x damage.

It feels so fucking good to have boss battles with some actual strategy to them.

Unless you have a Charjabug, a Focus Energy user or a Sweetnee, Wishiwashi's stats are insane at that point.

But I gotta applaud Gamefreak and their totem battles, way more fun than any of the Gen 6 leaders because they actually had some thought put into them.

This. I recently did a FireRed nuzlocke and after a certain point (I think lvl. 35 or so) I never had to worry about any of my pokemon "dying" anymore since they one-shotted everything anyways.

Some totem battles where a joke though.
Salazzle was oneshot by a Mudbray.
The dragon was almost oneshot by a mimikyu, the vikvolt was just a matter or whittling out with I can't even remember what pokemon.

Play Rough Mimikyu is indeed horrible. My team was slow all around so both it and Haunter always outsped. I actually whited out my first attempt, and only won the second because hypnosis missed.
I think the only totems that were truly easy were the Raticate and Salazzle
