I figured it was because the kids who liked pokemon in elementary/middle school were too "adult" for it and didn't come back until they actually grew up.

Yup.

Whenever this would occur most of the put-downs would make references to the anime. A specific one I remember is how "kiddie" it was for the Pokemon to only be able to say their own name. You can imagine my saltiness when Pokemon became "cool" again with GO, which is complete shit compared to the actual games.
