Marshadow is a Ghost type, so it's black (like a shadow) and has pillow tufts (to insinuate its ethereal nature).
I have no clue how you're considering this a step back...like at all. The only thing I can do is say "different strokes for different folks". Either that or you're just trying to purposely be a contrarian.
