The overall quality of gaming had definitely dropped, but you could still find decent gaming experiences on the gen 6 consoles. 2006+ really where gaming went off the deep end. In particular 2006 was where console gaming died, even though arguably 2006-2011 was a mini golden age for PC gaming.
Anything pre-1995 is generally too boring for me (interestingly enough the same year Earthbound and Chrono Trigger released).
