Battle bond seems worse than protean. I could be wrong, but you could just resist the powered up water shuriken. But old protean greninja could just switch to a new type to have an advantage over anything

Perhaps they wanted to go back to having starters all be treated equally so as to not have one overshadow the others. It just happens making them equally shitty on a competitive level was easier than making them all really good equally.

That's an awful idea, because Decidueye should overshadow the others in every way just like Greninja. Only contrarians would want the starters to be equal.
