I wouldn't say SM2 is confirmed, but if they hadn't taken a break from remakes one gen (Gen 5) then Black and White's remakes would have come out when ORAS did. We only get remakes when the technology/programming becomes drastically different enough to actually call it a remake instead of a simple rerelease.
So somewhere between SM and the remakes that come with Gen 9 (BW remakes), there needs to be another gen without remakes, or a huge graphical overhaul. Otherwise the Gen 6 remakes will just be the same games with Gen 7 tech, which isn't all that different and going by current trends won't be until 2019/2020.
It's the same issue Final Fantasy runs into - they always try to make the next game more and more impressive looking than the last one, but the technology just isn't there.
So either we get D/P 2 now and Gen 8 sequels, or we get Sun/Moon sequels now and D/P 2 next gen.
