You should know not to take /vp/, or any of 4chan, opinions seriously. A lot of it is just memes, contrarianism, and hive mentality. Every single game is hated by /vp/. Everytime a new game comes out, it gets heavily shitted on. XY hate is somewhat justifiable though, because it definitely had a lot of lost potential and is the weakest main series entry, but it's still not as bad as /vp/ says. I enjoyed it and the experience at the time, but it won't hold up that well.

Imho, SM is the best since BW.
No, I don't care for BW2.

Those reviews are being too generous. I love the game, but anything above 8 is too much.

It expands on the previous games a lot to provide a decent experience and the story shows improvement. Totems are a nice idea for boss fights but the trial themselves are piss-easy.

As someone who enjoyed gens 1 - 4, the story made the game really annoying to play through, and the low amount of new pokemon and exploration made it even worse.

I want to train, catch and battle, not watch cutscenes with a bunch of generic characters. I hate how GF is neglecting what made the series popular to begin with.

Salazzle was the easiest one. Mimikyu fucked half my team up by outspeeding me and using Play Rough to take half of my 'mons HP. That Raichu was a bitch too.

The game's still piss easy but it's a lot more challenging than XY was at least. I've never used exp share in any of the games either so maybe that helps.

Trials could have been more fleshed out, but the Totem fights are good. The mini gym puzzles missing isn't the problem for me, it's lack of dungeons in the overworld.

The entire game is incredibly linear. Most routes are just a straight path that goes from point A to B.
Too many cutscenes.
Small loading times everywhere that really add up and make the game feels slow
Annoying fixed camera
Small Pokedex
Region in general feels very empty. Towns all have lots of unenterable buildings and shots like pic related where you don't really see anything around you are frequent
Graphics are imo not very good looking.

More people use this generation's gimmick (Z-moves), even some random trainers, whereas the NPCs who actually used Mega Evolution in XY could probably be counted on one hand.

There's genwun pandering but it isn't as retarded as XY (here's a Kanto starter and a megastone for them! megastones for your actual starter? I dunno lmao) and no Lucario pandering at all

Alola feels like a consistent region whereas Kalos was a thematic clusterfuck.

Trial captains and Kahunas actually have a role in the plot and aren't just one-offs, same technically goes for the Elite 4 since 3/4 of them are either captains or kahunas that you meet.

Comparing obvious pictures to each other, looking for items that have wild battles forced onto them, just didn't feel like I was doing anything different aside from a shitty forced minigame.

The others don't really stick out and I can't quite recall what they were.
I miss the days where NPC gave me my badge/stamp etc... and just left me alone. Forced characters like Lillie and Hau are little better than the losers from X/Y, so I can't say I see much different.

Unova actually did the whole "shiny and new" thing right. It doesn't pushes the system beyond its limit. It doesn't shoves a bunch of unskippable cutscenes down your throat. It added a bunch of new pokemon. It had the whole east Unova to explore. It added the Gamesync, the global link, consolidated the competitive formats that we know today.

What SM did? It's basically XY with more cutscenes and better graphics. No substance at all.

It's linear done right unlike BW and XY with their literal circle route structure. And there are side-areas and side-quests. Ten Carat Hill for example.

It doesn't at all. The only real 'formula change' is the trials instead of gyms and really they're basically the same thing. Not only that, the reason we have trials is because you can't fit the gyms on the Alola region. When we get Gen 8 we're not going to get 'Island Trials' again, we'll just go back to gyms.

You literally can't do this. The national dex is transferred from Bank only, you can capture 300 tops - and that's assuming there's a healthy number of QR code Pokemon.

I wish they'd actually play the games before they write the reviews.

It really isn't. BW and XY actually let you explore a few routes here and there even if you were railroaded to the next city/town.

S/M is super railroaded.

The transition between 2D and 3D was a boost of enjoying the game and I like the region more than Alola.

Alola right now feels like a chain to walk through. Linear, quite some breaks for cutscenes and slow. Kalos was linear too, but there were quite a decent amount of placed to explore.

And content wise, it's on par with Kalos, but with more handholding. So I can't see why SM should be better than XY right now.

B2w2 was okay, xy was better yet, and oras impressed me with dexnav and delta episode

I agree that Pokemon games have been steadily improving but here's the problem with S/M - Try and think of the ways it's 'improved' the series.

-The trials are a slight change from the gym formula, but they're not that different, they're not an improvement and they won't persist into Gen 8.

-The atmosphere, lighting etc of Alola IS good, it does feel more vibrant that other overworlds...but it completely undermines itself with so much stuff being inaccessible. So many more buildings that you can't enter, so many places which look accessible and interesting on the map you can't go to.

-Plot? B/W already had a plot. I'm not even a fan of B/W but it was the first game in the series to have a more thought out plot. S/M hasn't really improved that, the plot isn't THAT amazing. It's more character-centric but that doesn't necessarily make it better, just different.

Other than these, what exactly HAS been improved? S/M aren't bad games but they haven't done anything cutting edge at all.

What do you mean? His post was pretty substantive. You may disagree about the Island Trials mechanic, but area inaccessibility is a real problem and the plot is trite like any other Pokemon game.
