Spiders are chelicerates, more specifically arachnids. They aren't even mandibulate so they're even further away from bugs than millipedes and centipedes.

But for the record, GF has given Grass typing to fungi and bug typing to anything that's an arthropod. There's no problem with that.

They were making a play on Komodo with Kommo-o. Mo-o is the Hawaiian term for dragon, and since the Komodo dragon resides in that Pacific island region, they matched them up.
