I have nothing to gain from contributing to society. What other people gain from doing so is being able to pretend they're not selfish pricks.
As far as where you can get more money from working, some countries happen to be so fucking stupid that they not only shower people on extended sick leaves and/or retirement with money, but they also let people with absolutely nothing wrong with them to cheat their way into such positions.
Admittedly, whether that is more than working woud depend on what the pay is, but it's certainly better than working low wages. Besides, nothing really prevents you from keeping a side business during the time you don't have to work, if you're into such things.
