I have no clue if it's standard policy, but when I went for XY, there were easily over 100 people standing outside for it and the store is teeny tiny. So they handed out numbers starting at 9:30 pm and let people in by numbers in small batches at a time.

Got my reserve ticket for Sun at Toys R Us so I'm gonna turn in early to avoid the midnight release revelry and get up early to see if I can beat the crowd (yea right) and get a couple extra copies for my cousins. I've got the day off so I'd be cool with getting my copy as early as possible anyway.

I have embraced Moon version as best, Pokemon-wise. I'm only missing out on Braviary, and I've already used one a million times in the past, anyway.

The only thing I'm unsure of is if there is gonna be major story differences between versions, but oh well.

Also I guess Moon doesn't get Alolan Ninetales, but oh well. I wasn't using one on my team anyway. Alolan Ninetales is a 10/10 Pokemon though, but its best moves are egg moves anyway, so... I'll just trade for one after I beat Moon.

Last time I went to a midnight event at Gamestop, it was for Amiibo and Smash Wii U. I was seriously the most normie guy there. Smelly goths, teenage autists playing 3DS in my face refusing to play multiplayer, literal children, people who only talk about themselves LOUDLY, etc. At least they had a Smash Wii U set up so I could watch people play. I just ended up playing my 3DS solo in a fucking crowd because no one wanted to be friendly who wasn't smelling like brimstone.

Call your store. Not anywhere near there, but my local mall does open up rarely for big midnight releases, usually only for the new COD game. It's kinda scary because they have the mall police all on patrol, making sure you go straight to the gamestop ASAP and nowhere else.

Went to Gamestop last night to finish paying off my preorder and they said that they weren't having a Midnight Release.

They mentioned that they had a TON of preorders, but cooperate refused to let them have it.

It's recommended that you do. Some stores may have limited amounts, their entire stock could be under preorder, or a combination of both.

To be safe, calll your local GameStop and ask them if they have any copies up for preorder before going over.

It's always just been a line outside (sometimes they let people in early to stand inside) and just wait till midnight. Sometimes they'll create two lines, one with fully paid off pre-orders and ones that aren't and they will handle the fully paid off ones because they can get those people in and out faster.
