There is not a single game as polished and accomplished, as deep and thruoght in that console that you can't even compare.
Satoru Iwata, who wasnt' part of GF at the time, even helped himself in the code of the came so you could fit 2 entire (well, Kanto almost entire) regions there.
Noone, and I say, noone, who had played Red and Blue at the time, saw the Gen II games and didn't went nuts. It was a step up in every sense.
It was so good that something as simple as day and night cicles hasn't been implemented in such an immersive way till the remakes.
For you to understand how good those games are, you had to play the first games, not Yellow, Red and Blue, and then play Gen II.
If you play today RBY, you'll have a hard time enjoying it. Meanwhile, GSC holds up extremely well, conserving all the charm of the 8bits as much as Super Mario Bros or Donkey Kong does.
