Spoilers instead of parroting others opinions let me clue you in: the transition for pokemon from gameboy advance to the DS was a rocky one platinum and pearl ran so slowly that comparatively a random encounter took so long it felt like it was loading on a PSX.
Black and White which could have been a soft reboot for the franchise was the most story focused generation gamefreak had ever tried. Unfortunately they ended up shitting the bed by adhering to their 8 badges elite four history. It could have been a big turnaround for the series.
That said I have played since genwun and believe emerald, platinum, and SS are what I would list as highlights in the series. I played the dog shit out of Y you can't deny xy was great. I need to revisit black and white one day but I was busy with work and school when they initially came out.
