Something feels "off" about this evolution line. Like at first they just drew a bigger more intimidating isopod, but then decided it wasn't good enough and slapped a bipedal body on it.

No idea, looks like a samurai x alien fusion to me, so it seems they exactly knew what they wanted to do.
What I'm curious about is the ability though, I wonder if the fucker is still a scaredy cat and just tries to look big and scary.

As far as I know Golisopod's design is partly based on samurais, so there's that. Plus the japanese name too meaning warrior or some shit.
