To be honest, X/Y were best experienced in the first months after their release. If you were college age then everybody around you had a copy, there was plenty of hype, streetpass and online features were cool, worldwide release date and lack of 3DS hacks meant everybody basically experienced them at the same time. Features like O-Powers and the like will probably be lost on you if youre playing it in retrospect. Gen 6 really went all out on the social features but without them youre left with a relatively bland single player campaign and then the Maison and, of course, catching em all.
Who knows, you might still have fun with them. The first few gyms are paced much better than the last ones so you'll probably find yourself amazed at the first three or four hours of the game and then disappointed by the rest of it.
