how does a complete beginner get into competitive?

I don't know anything about teambuiilding beyond the common sense basics

That's probably only viable for singles. Doubles require a lot more knowledge of synergistic team compositions.

The meta hasn't fully formed for gen VII yet so knowledge will not be as widespread for you to reference. But you should start by finding some early teams that competitive players are trying out, read up on IVs, EVs, nature, movesets, find out what makes the team good (or not) by testing it in battles, then start getting creative and branch out and test your own stuff.

And never, ever listen to 4chan for competitive advice. Remember this.

Just play the game

Like in every competitive game you'll get beaten most of the time, but there's no other way to learn

You'll get overwhelmed if you try to learn stuff before even playing, I don't recommend it

Once you get into it you can watch some battle videos too
