First of all, who cares.

Second of all, Pokemon has one of the biggest girl fanbases of any video game. Though /vp/ itself is undoubtedly predominantly male and waifufags/I-want-to-be-the-girlfags.

I never play a rpg and say "i'm gonna be myself" fuck being myself. thats what i do every fucking day. video games are escapist realities so I pretty much always pick a chick in a rpg, in pokemon i liked it cause my avatar wasn't the same fucking generic boy that is every game but with gen 6 and 7 there is finally customization but still females get the better options. its nice to have cute avatar and I dont' self insert myself.

Because not only do the female customization options look better, there are also way more options to pick from in the first place.

Because looking at a cute female player character is better than looking at a boring bishie boy player character (that, again, has barely as many clothing options as a female character, in turn making him even more boring)

Because the player character doesn't neccessarily need to be self-insert.

In any case, most people know most of these girl characters are actually dudes and just don't give a shit. What makes you give a shit?
