Even HGSS couldn't save that train wreck. It was a cool concept but poorly executed. You run through a watered down Kanto in a few hours with barely any meaningful interaction.

My main issue with Kanto is it feels heavily tacked on. Like I said Outside of the veru brief suicune thing, there's no meaningful interaction with any characters, it just feels empty

IIRC its up - left - up - left -right - up. What I know for sure is once you get to the area with the rough terrain, you go left, then head back to where you came from and you'll end up in a different area, although its a bit tricky since it also has rough terrain in the middle in the same sort of configuration. Once you're there, just go up and you'll be at the ruins.
