Same world, different times. For example Sun & Moon are currently the futuristic Pokémon games. Now, when it's our turn to play through the game, Ash already finished his Alola journey. It's kinda like we're following his own steps in each game. When we were in Kalos, Ash was in Alola.

Maybe it just likes to draw plotlines from news headlines, like Law and Order. Like, the news says some shit about Plasma summoning Dialga and Palkia, so they work it into the show.
