When the game gives you a leveling system, and has a mechanic that makes the leveling system actually matter if you turn it off, expect the game to actually require grinding if you turn it off.

I played the first half of the game with the exp share off. That coupled with the extremely low encounter rates of anything good had me grinding for a while. I did definitely get beat by lurantis a handful of times
