I have a non-binary friend who came out as non-binary, and it took me a while to understand/remember which pronouns to use, and they were understanding and helpful. That's been the majority of my experience with people as well.
We can argue all day about who outnumbers who, but it wouldn't matter. I'll postulate that you're experiencing the loud-and-often-online segment of "our" ranks, but I can't claim to know how things even out. I do try to call those types of people out in a constructive way when I see them, but many of them are simply angry and, frankly, immature, so it's mostly fruitless. It's a shame they've defined the community though. Not the first time a loud minority has overpowered a benign majority, though.
