It is kind of weird seeing Pokemon just stand around awkwardly until they attack / get hit. 3D is meant to make the battles more believable but it ends up making it less in some ways because you can't use your imagination to flesh it out easily, the scene is presented to you at face value.

They can reanimate the existing models with minimal effort, compared to redrawing sprites for every new pose.

That's actually one of the main benefits of using 3D models over sprites. But it's GF so who knows how they handle anything in their development.

Stadium games kept it interesting through the use of camera angles and cuts to make battles look more dynamic.

I wish the games took a cue from that. Stuff like zooming in on the Pokemon's face as he approaches for a close quarters attack, then cutting to the other Pokemon receiving the attack adds a lot of punch to things.

Not OP but the idle poses still suck. The last non-Pokemon game I played was FF9; the characters in that and in most games have an actual battle stance where they look like they're readying to attack. If they stood around doing nothing at all when they weren't attacking, like Pokemon, they would look stupid.

Give them dynamic animations that aren't just "standing/gliding/wobbling/flapping until the opponent uses a move or you attack" and future-proof models won't be as bad.
But GameFreak already dug themselves a grave by not doing that with XY, there's no way in hell they'll bother doing it for 850+ Bastards and their forms, regional variations, Megas and formes in Gen 8.

I wouldn't mind if they at least kept a default sprite+single animation for when viewed through the PC. i hate having to find fan made sprites of generation 6/7 pokemon. 3d can stay in all other situations.

And on that note, they already spent their efforts on Amie Animations during Gen 6, which was undoubtedly pure hell to a point where they can't see themselves ever dropping it in future games, compared to HGSS which was just "make really small overworld sprites and a bunch of generic scripts and a few unique dialogues."

People are saying it's the idle animations that suck but I fucking miss how dynamic the fainting animations were in colosseum/battle revolution

I'm pretty sure for some mons like swinub all they do now is slow down the idle animation and call it a day

Given how garbage the 3DS' Resolution is and GameFreak can't optimize for shit, I'd expect proper sizes and proportions in the inevitable Switch Games next gen, assuming they take advantage of camera angles to get a good view of both sides rather than what Gen 6/7 did.

Purrloin stands on its hindlegs in the 3D model but is quadrupedal as a sprite so that kind of fucks me up, too

Hitmontop is a shitty Pokemon through-and-through and every sprite/model of it is awful just because its design is awful.

The reason they had to redo the sprites in newer games is cuz they now had more memory,add colors , more detail it was basically because of new technology thanks to 3D models they can jsut grab the model they previously made , scale it to new resolution and there you go,no need for more work.

I don't think there's been a release of unused Pokemon since Gen 3- but most of those were implemented and used in some capacity even. After that, there were only slight alterations in beta design, and I think the last mention of unused/prototype content was an alternate design of Hydregon mentioned in an interview.
