If I get something good BUT I don't want it (like a starter or legendary or one-time-only pokemon) I put it on the GTS and request something reasonable in return.
Protip: If you put a legendary on the GTS, you can get almost literally ANYTHING in return, and I assume this is because there are always players who don't have what you are offering but don't want to start a new game or buy a new copy.
Like for example, I guarantee you if you put the box legendary on the GTS and asked for a Milotic between lv 90-100, you would have it within a few hours. And the reason is because anyone can get a lv 90 Milotic, they just have to put the effort in. And people will put the effort in if they can get a legendary they couldn't normally get in return.
I swear this works EVERY time. I've also had a lot of good luck with wonder trade in general and think it's one of the best features introduced in gen 6.
