It would be like gauging the importance of Han Solo in Star Wars in relation to other characters. Relative to other characters alone he's a literal who with no importance but by using the Luke Skywalker (because he has influence over other characters which is what a mc does by existence in stories) Han Solo suddenly becomes way more important despite his traits alone if not connected to the mc. Which shows how he can be seen as a pet character.
Hapu in comparison, by herself is just a wandering kid trying to become strong enough to be a kahuna on a island with no island challenges, no big population, no development. Even with the connection to mc she becomes nothing more than a glorified escort who leaves the stage the moment the mc and Lillie gets back from the UB dimension.
