Game Freak hasn't ever referenced the direct gender of a previous game's protagonist except Red, because Gen I didn't have gender options

I would believe any of you if you had proof. Hell, they didn't even reference the gender of the protagonist in B2W2 even though you can directly link those games to your BW Save

Eh. Captains canonically train the totem pokemon, so the island challenge isn't that different from the gym system anyways. It's just that the captains don't directly control them, and you get a marginally more useful z-crystal rather than a badge.

It's for the ORAS episodes and the one with Lance. Not that it matters, those are canon to Generations only. Those scenes don't even happen the way they do in the games beyond the Magma and Rayquaza episodes.
