The VGC format is Nintendo's competitive ruleset for playing pokemon. It is a doubles format match and only the alolan pokedex is allowed this year.

This image was compiled by examining the top 25 teams on pokemon Showdown's vgc17 ladder. Since the last image was created, the torkoal and cheesy boosting strategies have lessened in use. This is because overall team design has become more confident, fluid, and efficient, so teams are losing less to these gimmick strategies. People are now damaging the torkoal before it uses eruption, which drastically lowers its power and leaves it as a dead weight. The new predominant strategy is simple balanced-offense with high powered 'mons.

There exists a prominent lower tier of high-use 'mons. These pokemon cannot be put onto any team, but they are important additions to certain teams and team designs. Ask questions about these for clarification.

Having trouble deciding what the forth move on my Wishiwashi should be. In a TR setup with Oranguru I'm running Surf/Endeavor/Protect, last move I thought of was EQ, but Grass Terrain from my Bulu mitigates the damage.

What mon(s) does Aerodactyl support? I know he gets tailwind and whirlwind (I think) for speed control and fucking over TR setters, and it's pretty fast on its own.

He is used as an alternative to Oranguru trick room setting. He has an easier time putting it up due to Disguise (basically guaranteed if you have a follow me user), but cannot abuse it as much as oranguru can. Mimikyu is the less risky, safer option for setting trick room, but you also get less potential out of it.

There are 2 ways people play him:
Blizzard spammer with choice specs or the power item that boosts ice moves, or as an aurora veil setter. As far as my analysis informs me, the rest of the team should NOT be designed around hail. Hail is a bad weather and does not have any noteworthy effects besides increasing blizzard's effectiveness, which ninetales himself has, so there is no reason to double-up on ice types for your team.

araquanid's ability is a direct counter to torkoal and it has access to entraintment. Imagine araquanid uses water bubble on its allies epecially Gyarados, tapu fini and so on.

Better run this guy with TR support, since it's so slow. Quiet/Modest nature with full investment in Sp.Atk and the rest goes into any form of bulk. Go with Hyper Voice, Dragon Pulse, Protect and Flamethrower, you can run Draco Meteor instead of Pulse and it also has access to Roost.

Rain would be redundant imo. Araquanid is used as a fire attacks absorber and dealer of water damage, as well as for Lunge. It doesn't need rain because it does high enough damage with liquidation anyway, and if the enemy team has a water attacks counter the rain is not going to help it break through those counters, especially because araquanid in reality only has 1 effective move type (water). Every other attack it uses is underpowered due to not being boosted by the ability.

Right now it's mainly being used against the torkoal stragglers who are still around.

I ran a cloud 9 minimum speed set with assault vest back when torkoal was very popular. it could switch into torkoal and take almost no damage from the eruption then kill the thing with draco meteor

Yes. But most teams that run Guru also run a smeargle for follow me. Smeargle instruct is not really that good, if you want to go that route Transform is better nine times out of ten.

All Smeargle needs to be good in doubles is Follow Me and Fake Out. He's the only Pokemon that learn those two moves together iirc.

The other two moves are tailored to your team. Spore, Taunt, Transform, Spikey Shield/Baneful Bunker, Quick Guard, Wide Guard, Tailwind, + literally anything else.

I really like the look of Mimikyu and its unique typing.

What teammates would compliment it in vgc/dubs? Its stats seem a bit low, although it can SD and has decent speed.

Mimikyu's best niche in vgc is being a trick room setter that can only be stopped by roar or double taunt (Or the rare mold breaker crit hit through disguise or something), which is why you pair it with something that can taunt enemy roar/whirlwind users and or use follow me.

SS is illegal on Carracosta until bank. Even if so, he is so fucking slow that swift swim doesn't make much of a difference. Right now the viable swift swimmers are Golduck and Poliwrath. Neither are particularly good, Golduck avoids intimidates and Poliwrath is a super high risk/high reward pokemon with Z-Belly Drum.

You need to get out of the karenfag mentality if you want to play VGC friend. Especially if you're entering a competition.

As in I can't use snowflake mons because I like them? Thing is I think I almost understand how to theoretically build a team at this point (except the more fancy roles like support) but I have no idea what is being played and which Pokemon are the most viable/synergize the most. Smogon doesn't seem to have proper tiers yet or I'm too stupid to find them and guides are all about XY/ORAS.

You can actually run whatever you want in VGC. But it depends on what you're willing to give up for it. You might sacrifice win rate in favor of running your favorite mon, or you might need to use 5 mons you absolutely despise so your bro can shine. If you're willing to give up any of the two, you can run anything.

Here's the trick to use your bro that's not very good without being a scrub: You make a team and if by some sheer miracle your bro manages to fit in in a way nothing else manages to fit in because only your bro can do what's needed that's when you use your bro.

Example: Your team is about wearing down your opponent with TW and WoW but you need a Water/Fairy Pokemon in your team for a reason, obviously, the first thing that goes to mind is Tapu Fini BUT her ability completely ruins the strategy your team is based around, what to do? Use Primarina who would be completely outclassed by Tapu Fini in nearly every other situation.

Basically, don't build teams around shitmons, let them fit into normal proper teams naturally if the chance appears.

Just play. As you play you'll see what people use and you will absorb that information. You'll lose a lot at first but slowly with surely you'll get better because you are acquiring new knowledge to put to use for the next game.

This is the thing with apparent shitmons: You do NOT build your team around them. See the post with the common top 25 pokes at the top of the thread? That's your 'starter' team builder list. Build a team that makes sense from those. Building a team of mostly meta pokemon basically ensures it won't be completely terrible. Play, figure out what beats you and adjust accordingly, tweak and modify your lineup, moves, strategy and EVs.

Then, once you have a very stable sort of team you can start looking at what pokemon who aren't on the list might offer you and playing around with them. Some pokemon are just completely unviable, they are outclassed in everything they can do. Carracosta is in that category, he is objectively inferior to Relicanth without his HA and even with it he's kind of shit.

Everyone loves the story of Parkchirisu but the reality is with that thing, he found a niche for it. It was a pokemon that was good at redirecting electric attacks in a meta where Gyarados was strong and there weren't many good LR users.

I'm pretty sure it will tank most maro's boners, plus the 60% chance to poison with poison jab is nice for those stalling pokemon. I don't really need power of alchemy on muk, and I like it because it's super bulky, and when times get tough I can explode which deals a lot of damage.

How many Evs does 1 Isle Evelup session give?
I trained my Tapu Koko for 61 sessions in attack and it went from 156 to 165, which apparently corresponds to at least 60 EVs. I thought when your Isle was lvl 3 it gave 4 EVs a sessions?
My Tapu Koko is lvl 60 and has 22 or 23 IV attack.

Because regular poison isn't that useful in doubles, especially when Muk can 1-2hko all of the things it needs to be attacking.

Gluttony lets Muk eat one of the +50% hp berries at 50% health as opposed to 25% health. It basically heals him back to full once its hp gets to half.

Register at Play! Pokemon to get a actual ID which lets you attend tournaments, you end up linking it to your Global Link Account where your game is registered.

Go to actual physical VGC tournaments for the highest qualifictaion point payouts and cash if you are really good, there is a event locator on the Play! Pokemon site which shows upcoming official tournaments and etc.

There are occasionally online tournaments which also pay out points but these are fairly small.

I don't have the specifics but basically what you have to do is attend tournaments and win cp based on how well you place in those tournaments (the bigger the tournament the more points you get), with certain points you get qualified to participate at worlds.

You only need CP to qualify for Worlds. All other events you can enter even if Nats is your first tourney ever and you have no CP.

Also, remember that this year Nats were eliminated and replaced by the International Challenges so you better be ready to shell some good bucks out.

Dragonite is ass. Use Chomp. Nihilego is best when paired with Bulu but Bulu has anti-synergy with Chomp. It's okay if you don't bring them together though, you should bring another Tapu if that's the case. Probably Koko, it doesn't mind being paired with Chomp.

You can also run Groundium-Z Chomp for a single target EQ which makes it easier to run alongside both Bulu and Koko. Celesteela is also pretty good with Chomp due to EQ immunity and there being a lack of good fliers around to offensively pair with Chomp, your other realistic options are Pelliper which does nothing for him (though it's good with Koko) and Gyarados (which likes Marowak-A support, keeping in mind that Marowak has anti-synergy with Koko).

I have this one,Typhlosion Spe/SpD and Mimikyu Atk/SpD. Those three helps me get all power items un Battle Royal, but what next? Should I first breed all meta must have pokemons like Salamence, Garchomp? I want to add something like poison Salazzle+Toxapex but don't know if they work or not. Jesus the amout of information and builds on smogon ridiculous. I completly lost. Too much pokemons, too much moves to learn everything by yourself. Don't go breeding pokemon without a plan. Play on simulator a shitload before you bother breeding. It's a major time investment to make new mons on cart if you're not injecting.

It's pretty decent. I'd just run with that and play a few dozen battles on sim, figure out what beats you and adjust accordingly.

Playing games is the most important part of the team building process. It's much smarter to just put together a team quickly then get experience with it. It's way easier to figure out your weaknesses in play than it is on paper.

Minimize is practically non-existen in VGC, you might see it here and there in some gimmick teams but not a real threat that you should prepare for. Setups are not that uncommon (DD Gyarados comes to mind) but more often than not is easier to just switch in a counter and kill it.

So it all comes to sludge bomb and sludge wave. If it's possible, you could run both and use nihilego as a clean up sweeper. I wouldn't run wave without having bomb though since you could fall short in damage on the tapus for the KO.

I don't think Nihilego should be putting up screens. You could put protect instead of reflect (if you're not running a choice item on it). And I think that would be good enough. Test the set and see if you're missing coverage that Nihilego could provide and proceed to change accordingly.

My current thoughts are:
1) Comfey is dead weight. There has never been a match where I've wanted to bring it over any other teammate, so I'm looking for a replacement.
2) I feel like I should add a Wide Guard user. The only mon giving me trouble consistently is Aerodactyl, which outspeeds my whole team and beats me with flinch hax (not to mention my considerable weaknesses to rock). I think Wide Guard would help fix that. Maybe replace Gyarados with Pelipper, and then keep my Intimidate and Roar by replacing Comfey with Arcanine?
3) While bulky and useful, Gyarados doesn't have much offensive presence, which can make me lead kind of weak sometimes.
4) Kind of building off the previous point, I don't really have much in the way of strong water attacks, and I have zero electric attacks. I also seem to lean more on the physical side with this team, so that puts me at a bit of a disadvantage against intimidate. Pelipper might help with this too, since it's a special attack with rain-boosted moves.
5) I've only fought Muk once, but it freaked me out when it outsped my Marowak and knocked off its Thick Club, making it useless. I think I'm gonna need a solid answer to this mon if it becomes more common (currently in ELO hell, workin' my way up).

I'd consider Dazzling Gleam or HP Ice over sludge wave. One of the neat things about Nihilego is that it has one more base speed than Chomp so if you're running timid you can outspeed and OHKO non-defensive, non scarfed variants. I think it's a try it and see kind of thing though, if you don't have trouble with chomp then having sludge wave is nicer for the potential dual hits. Keeping in mind that over a third of the primary meta pokes are resistant to it, which does reduce its value as a spread move.

Even if you ignore the shard requirements, getting to level 100 is a slog with no blissey bases or rotato restaurants. In summary: hyper training sucks, save your caps for legendaries.

I'd drop Crunch for protect and just carry Groundium-Z for single targeting, you need EQ to deal with Muk and Groundium gives you the ability to single target it and avoid the grassy terrain damage nerf.

Krook gets wrecked by most of the ground immune stuff in the meta (Celesteela, Gyara, Pelipper) whether he carries Crunch or not.

1. Pick up beans
2. Spend beans on Treasure Island
3. Throw Pokes down in the coal mines

Use your TR on P2 to negate enemy TRs. Marowak/Gyarados/Garchomp provides a couple solid pairs of sweepers that protect each other. You might want a Steel or Poison type to deal with Tapus.

So I'm trying to build my first team ever, a Krookodile/Arcanine double intimidate core. I'm thinking about running Arcanine sp.atk with Overheat and Tapu Fini with Whirlpool/Defog/Nature's Madness/Taunt.

Z-Conversion my man. +1 in every stat and lets you get STAB Adaptability boosted whatever to spam. I've seen blizzard, thunder/discharge, or psychic depending on the persons team.

It's a little gimmicky but if you play it right you can almost guarantee a safe setup.

Excellent taste, man.

Nihilego is an amazing anti-meta sweeper, and Fini I've seen run as both a sweeper and a support. Nihilego gives you a counter to the Tapus, Torkoal, A-Ninetails, Arcanine, Mimikyu, etc. Amazing choice in my opinion. Timid nature, run Sludge Bomb, Power Gem, [Sludge Wave, Dazzling Gleam, or HP Ice], and either another coverage move from those three, or, if you don't have a Choice item, Protect.

Tapu Fini you can either run as a special sweeper with water and fairy STAB and decent bulk, or as a tanky support with access to Defog, Nature's Madness, and Taunt.

I recommend a physical attacker to complement these two - A-Marowak can Lightningrod electric moves away from Fini and drop Earthquakes against poison and steel mons that want to kill Fini, Metagross and Celesteela are immune to Sludge Wave if you run it and provide more anti-fairy while also being pretty bulky (Celesteela also is flying if you want to run it alongside A-Marowak - they make a powerful core), and Garchomp can hit hard, fast, and wide with its attacks.

Trick room is not hard to deal with. Lead with Gyarados or Arcanine and roar out the Oranguru/Mimikyu/whatever other TR setter.

Fake out the follow me user if they're paired with one. If they predict the fake out and double protect you still win because roar goes through protect and phases the TR setter regardless.

Is Roar still negative priority? Because in that case it won't work since they're still setting up TR on first turn.
It only looks to work on the second statement but even then that's a rather small chance. Roar is still good to remove stat set up Pokémon.

Trick room is -7 priority. Roar is -6. It works every single time, I've only lost to trick room teams early season before I learned this fact.

What fake out user do you use?

Because literally every TR team I see is:
>Oranguru + Something that hits really hard and it's fast like Garchomp or something bulky with Spread moves like Musdale etc
>Use their instruct combo
>They did good damage or maybe even got a KO so they don't mind losing the mon paired with Oranguru
>Now something like Torkoal enters and they setup trick room
>Late sweep
>If you targeted Oranguru instead you just get rekt by Garchomp
