Digimon usually get human clothing and weapons, not to mention they get "anthromized" if that is even a real word by the final stages.
Pokémon are still really animal like through all stages, even if they bipedal with the exception of the obvious Human-Like Egg group.

Those aren't needless. They break up the color scheme. The digimon just has random needless shit everywhere that's detail for the sake of detail and it gets to the point of being grotesque. It doesn't fit pokemon at all.

Too many elements that look handcrafted or manmade as opposed to more organic or naturally originating parts.

Of course, this is also a far from perfect definition. Everybody draws the line in different ways. For me, pokemon like genesect, klinklang, and type: null are all fine, because they are explained and justified through their lore. But something like dialga strays too far for me. It has a lot of adornments that seem tacked on to the point where it doesn't look like it move naturally. Some people will say that's ok because it's a legendary, and that's fine, but it was definitely the first pokemon introduced to the series that made me think "this doesn't look like it belongs in this series". UBS on the other hand are all fine, because you wouldn't expect something from another dimension to look too similar.

I mostly agree with this. I just have a problem with Klink's line because of the unoriginal evolutions that just adds new pieces and sizes, which is what pretty much makes it easy to tell most Fakemon from actual Pokémon.

So, what makes Digimon "too detailed" in comparison with Pokemon instead of the latter being "not detailed enough"?

The point of Pokemon is to simulate ecosystem with real life animals replaced with similar beings with a twist. They are mostly relatively simple because nature itself does not overcomplicate. The point of Digimon is to create a battle-capable AIs that are able to more or less form a society. They are overdesigned to show that they are advanced, complex structures, with humans taking part in the creation process one way or another, and as such the "ugly abomination" way isn't really a bad thing.

Yeah this really puts the differences in franchises to light.

One on the left is a silly, goofy design with soft simple shapes and a fun concept, the other is an edgy over the top "scary" monster with spikes and stripes.

The left is a great example of a Pokemon.

We can run a simple test. Something that clearly distinguishes Digimon from Pokemon is the Eye Style. If you add an eye from pic related onto a Pokemon and the result could easily pass for a Digimon, then i say you have a winner. I don't think there's many pokemon that could easily pass for Digimon though, to be honest.

There are some designs in both franchises that could pass for being the other (I could see stuff like Gigimon becoming something that I could see in a Pokemon game).

However when people compare the two they use the "edgy" designs from Pokemon and that's just reaching. The edgy Digimon designs are overly-detailed, wear a lot of manmade items like robes or BDSM outfits and sometimes feel like different bodyparts from different creatures were used to make them a-la Frankenstein like someone mentioned above.

You can't just say something like Diancie looks like Sakuyamon.

Appmon, they're basically digimon based on apps, with levels that correspond to regular digimon levels, the ones in the picture should correspond to rookie or child level digimon if I'm not wrong.

Stop with this over-underdetailed meme. Digimon simply have a ton of manmade stuff in their designs (gloves, guns, scarfs, clothes, armor, etc) while in pokemon the object IS the pokemon (Aegislash, Klefki) or the man-made object is made more natural (Decidueye and its wing-bow).

Actually, no. Appmons were created precisely to deviate from the whole Tamagotchi thing and making Digimon more related to actual things: phone apps.

This is why no Appmon is a baby stage and why none of them grow like Digimon do (this only happens through appgattai).
