I think Fighthing 1/2x vs Flying is more about how you can't harm the wind with physical moves, not exactly about birds. Fighting's weakness against Psychc and Flying is also about how they can't physically harm something they can't see. Maybe fairies are too cute for them so they can't use full power against them

Literally the best thing you can do if you're going to be electrocuted either way is hug a big piece of steel. Lots of surface contact. If you're able to avoid being electrocuted, the steel won't help.

IIRC Lick was still super effective against Psychics, it's just weak as fuck, plus all Ghost moves counted as Physical and the OG ghosts all have poor physical attack. Likewise for Bug the only move that actually did damage was Pin Missile.

I read a bit about how gen 1's development was a clusterfuck, but they stacked things so hard in favor of Psychic that they probably went too far in the other direction in Gen 2. Ghost should have been merged into Dark instead of making them two separate types.

Bulbapedia says that psychic was immune to ghost in gen 1. But lick was the only damaging ghost move anyway. (Not including night shade which doesn't care about types.)

And gen 2 didn't make it too much more difficult for psychic types. They only added one damaging ghost type move (shadow ball) and one ghost type pokemon (misdreavus).

Lick was indeed SE against psychic types. The problem is when you consider that the Gengar line were the ONLY ghosts in gen1, and lick was considered a physical attack, with 20 BP, running off gengar's abysmal attack stat. Couple this with the fact that they made Gengar Ghost/Poison, so he gets assblasted by Psychic. To sum up, Gengar was technically the only counter but isn't a counter at all.

Likewise with all the Bug types in gen1, the only bug pokemon that learned actual bug moves were Beedril, Venemoth, Parasect. Bee and moth were half poison, so they were shit. And parasect only had Leech Life, which was again a 20 BP move.

Gen 2 added Dark and Steel, and changed Bite to Dark (making single player a pain in the ass for Psychics), which meant Crunch was also Dark, ensuring anything with a pair of jaws could counter Psychics.

I actually think your weakness and SE suggestions make a lot of sense mostly. Metal obviously conducts electricity. No amount of physical strength can overcome being poisoned to death and everyone has obviously heard of bug spray.

Normal being immune to Fairy is sort of reaching I think.
