To be fair, Blastoise's weapon is readily visible in its design, and Greninja and Samurott do explicitly fight with weapons even if they aren't apparent in their design, and it's easy to make out the trident element in Empoleon's design. It's still bullshit as a trend though, considering how it explicitly doesn't occur for Feraligatr, Swampert, and Primarina. The grass starter one is just as silly.

Nothing, because there is no pattern.

Everything Gamefreak makes that we attempt to make theories for falls flat because Gamefreak just does what they do, and we over-analyze everything about it.

I'm pretty sure there have been a small handful of theories that were actually correct, but most of them are wrong. Like probably this one.
