Actually FOEs in Pokemon sound amazing.

Just big balls of death roaming around caves and other such places. Could be early fully evolved monsters like the Route 1 Salamence in SM, except they walk around and will kick your ass if you get caught. Give them a super totem aura that gives +4 to all stats and lowers their catch rate to below Beldum level.

Absolutely not. It's a turn-based JRPG, the battle system is what matters when we talk about challenge in this context, not the out of battle exploration gameplay.

SMD's counterpart is Etrian Mystery Dungeon, obviously.

But yeah, SMD is comparable to EMD. Regardless of the challenges of the dungeon crawling itself, the boss battles and enemy encounters by themselves are very challenging and reward good strategy and team building. And more importantly, EO shatters the notion that turn-based RPGs can't be hard (just "tedious" according to /v/ermin)
