>>30501004there have been rounded, cartoony designs since gen 1, and not all later gen pokemon, even in the latest gen are rounded/cartoony.
I know the image is part of the shitpost too, but even Krabby features round/curved shapes like eyes, mouth, the u shape connecting the horns, those balls on its underside, etc. while Crabrawler also features sharp angles such as the horns, mandibles, and tips of the legs.
Usually pokemon are designed on a case by case basis where the designers decide whether there should be more rounded edges or more sharp edges depending on the individual pokemon. By not limiting themselves to "only sharp angles" or "only round curves" they can get a lot more variety out of the designs.
>>30501167"the best designs are in the first two gens."
Pure opinion, but I'm curious what criteria you are using. Also why are you still here if you only find the new pokemon designs "tolerable"?
>>30501785The "inconsistency" angle is a good point I think. However, it's kind of too late for that. I think the realistic designs and the cartoony designs have been there from the start with Gen 1, and with so many more mons to design, it's only natural that they would push both sides, as it gives them more design opportunities. To pick one would be to limit themselves to either "only serious gamerz" or "only filthy casuals" whereas Pokemon was always meant to have both cute and cool designs to appeal to as many kids as possible.
