What the fuck is up with this place? I know Team Skull took it over, but why, and how? Why the fuck are there massive walls around this tiny town? What kind of people lived here before it fell into ruin? Who lived in the original mansion?

This place has some serious DEEPEST LORE behind it, and we don't know anything about it. This seriously rustles my jimmies.

It's on the same island as Tapu "fuck civilization" Bulu. It was probably a bountiful city paradise before Bulu got pissy and went apeshit on it, so that the only people who live there are people with nobody else.

Pretty much a Sodom and Gomorrah type thing, except the only perceived sin in the deity's eyes is "people".

I feel like it would explain why exactly a group of thugs were able to just up and take over a city without many people batting an eye.

Why, is 'cause they washed out of the Island Trial, and probably had parents who took it as suprsrsbsns, getting ostracized from society as a result. I mean, it's easy to see when you compare the Punks to the Skulls. Just add a little more rebellion into a Punk's personality...

The How, well, if it was abandoned, having a way to get there was all that was necessary. Sending a raid or two out to snag a couple Challenge Barriers (who hasn't heard of coning, FFS?) was probably nothing to them after getting some numbers.

Can some people look into Thrifty Megamart as a business. Something about it seems shady, started when a NPC questioned how they can afford coupon system, followed by the selling of the strange souvenir. I just feel like something is being kept a secret about the company.

Unlikely. The whole town is typical 18th/19th colonial architecture. It was probably built by Unovan plantation owners or people from Imperial Kanto.

The way the coupon operates is much like the way a lot of grocery stores work these days, using a 'card' (which they can datamine to hell with) to get your 'discounts' (which used to be the normal prices).

Nope. Pokemon are the "gun" of pokemon universe (ignore that certain early anime episode which was never mentioned again). That is why the team leader bother pokemon-battling you instead of shooting you. Only when you don't have pokemon left to defense yourself that they are free to use their pokemon to kill/beat the shit out of you. That is also why Ghetsis made a big deal out of making people release their pokemon.

They're only like 20 flying types in pokemon that can learn Hyper Beam and most of those don't reach stat levels to one shot.

Plus, pokemon levels are not linear. A bunch of level 50 kahuna/captain mon have around 10x the experience of a level 20 grunt. The strongest grunts in the main game are around level 35.

If a level 25 vullaby tries hyperbeaming Hapu's Mudsdale, it's going to itch, maybe. And Mudsdale could just chuck a rock at it and one-shot it,.

Maybe they built the wall to try to protect themselves in case Bulu goes on another rampage.
Getting to Po town for the first time was my favorite part of the game. Especially finding that even the Pokemon center was fucked up. I fully expected it to be nice and normal inside, with maybe some dialogue about how even Skull was unable to chase the Nurse away from her post, and then bam. It was creepy and sad, but also comical. That's why Skull was such a great team: they really evoked a wide range of emotions.

When I played through, I figured Nanu was Guzma's father and they had owned the mansion

Battling someone more or less fairly 1-1 or 1-2 tops seems to be like an unshakable norm in Pokemon. Like, even criminals seem to think that's the proper thing to do. To my knowledge, the only one that didn't care about that and decided to just straight up kill you was Ghetsis, and he's the most messed up guy in the series.
