Why do we have to save the fucking world in every game?

Can't we just go back to dudes and chicks doing comfy training to be the best like in gen I and II? Why cant the bad guys just be in it for the money?

Also, Team Skull (for the most part anyway). And technically you didn't save the world, you saved your waifu's mom in gen 7.

Skull was only good because they were purposely written to be as pathetic as possible, and Rocket's only redeeming quality is Giovanni, which still isn't that great in game Canon.

I like the simplicity of beating the league too, but...

The one time the series needed the high stakes story line of saving the region from destruction, they blow it. Why even hype the UBs if they're just going to be some post-game fetch quest?

And now they'll make gen 8 even more so about the legendaries... fuck.

Mewtwo was never hyped in game.

All it had was some optional backstory you could read about in cinnabar

It wasn't the main focus of the story at the midpoint to then immediately be forgotten about until postgame.

UBs show up, are super important, then you save the crazy ather lady, catch nebby, and the game just fuckin forgets wormholes and UBs exist

but we didn't save the world in gen 7. The wormhole closed right after it was opened and only a few UB got out who didn't do much. You were saving Lillie's family

I admit that these people have basically an impossible task, I don't think you CAN write a good story about pokemon given that it's intended for kids and has a specific format

If they actually tried to it would have to be some sort of magic realism and that would be too strange for their mass audience

I think one of the big benefits of this gen is that it doesn't take itself that seriously and that it is limited in scope

This is something BW1 really got right. The evil team quest and the gyms/league quest were entwined so neither felt like a tacked-on diversion that you had to deal with to get to the other one.

Mewtwo was significant because he was the most powerful wild pokemon and the last pokemon in the dex. You aren't told by an NPC to go catch him to advance a storyline The cave is just accessible now that you've beat the game.

You can even encounter the legendary birds in caves without much fanfare.

How can this be an example if the gen 1 games didn't have some overblown story about the box legendary mons like gen 3 onward?

It feels like you could probably find some realistic political conflicts that are de-fangable enough for a Pokemon story. Shit, Team Skull really wasn't that bad to me other than their ridiculous outfits, sometimes the small-time shitheads make the best antagonists for these kinds of stories.

Probably the worst thing about the way it currently is though is just how forced and nonsensical everything feels, though I guess as I was writing this I just realized that bad guys probably cooperate so readily after losing battles because it's them against your six supernatural animals with an insatiable bloodlust. Maybe if they pushed that more into dialogue or cutscenes or whatever the story as a whole would feel a little less retarded.

You gotta use Rock Smash on a very specific rock in the Whirl Islands. The baby Lugia looks the same as the regular one, but is level 5. Sadly, if you fight it, immediately after the fight ends, the mama Lugia kills your character in a cutscene, resulting in a game over. Then you have to restart your game because Lugia corrupts your save file.

It's pretty underwhelming, desu. Definitely not worth it.

No. Team Rocket is easily the worst team. And if you don't remember, Team Rocket was taking over Kanto. That's more than "just for money".

I can see what you mean though. Gens 3 and 6 kind of took it to the extreme by almost destroying all life on earth.

Gens 4, 5, and 7's plots never really go beyond saving the region or saving someone who's lusting over power.

Wasn't Gen 4 the most extreme of them all? Cyrus was trying to unmake all of existence so he could do it over. Or am I just remembering it wrong?
