In Gen VI, people managed to figure out it was the game flagging bad bits because of a digital copy/save on a shitty cheap SD card. It "spread" because the game wasn't writing saves to the SD card properly or something. The first patched fixed Lumiose, and supposedly this. The main thing is you couldn't get bad eggs over Wonder Trade.
Bad Eggs in earlier gens can be accounted as bad hacks, but I had bad hacks flagged by Pokemon Revolution and said Pokemon work in-game, so they had to be REALLY bad.
Also I think Mario Kart was one of the games that were also effected by shitty SD cards, but I don't recall off the top of my head what it did.
