I was only able to show up for the last match, but I am just so disappointed at that Alejandro guy's mistakes. I feel even with a Curse Muk he could've pulled through at the end of round 2. Start of round 3 was sad with what happened to his Kartana

So I'm fooling around in the battle tree to practice some doubles since the game never really lets you do so otherwise - I'm running Bulu, Whimsicott, Muk and Drampa as the four (and Eviolite Clefairy plus A-Marrowak as my other two for my temp team). Drampa just isn't pulling his weight and I feel like I've got no offensive pressure besides Bulu who shitstomps stuff.
I don't really like Salamance, so I don't really want to switch to that instead of Drampa - Magnezone seems to put in quite a bit of work. Should I switch puff the magic dragon out for that?
Also is Clefairy and Whimsicott too much on a single team? I was considering Oranguru as well. Garchomp is another option as my team has a big poison weakness.
Not going to compete, just want to potentially do some wifi gen battles and battles with friends for fun.

Either way, Magnezone IS a one trick pony. All he's there for is to kill Celesteela and provides zero utility besides that. He's not a shitmon anymore but he's not a splashable tip top Pokemon either.

They are shitmons, except that they do one thing well and thus have a niche.

Magnezone fits a very specific niche, which he is very good at and thus he's an amazing metagame choice, but he's not a good battle tree pokemon because he doesn't do shit against the vast majority of pokemon that aren't steel type and weak to one of his stabs. He has like two usable moves and 60 speed.

You want coverage choices and easy OHKOs in battle tree, and Magnezone does not give you that. Niche choices are for metagaming, not for going up against quick claw sheer cold walreins and brightpowder minimize chanseys.

Let's say I have light screen up, and then I use surf.
Will the light screen lower damage done to my ally pokemon by its parter's surf?
Or does reflect/light screen only affect damage from enemy pokemon?
Haven't been able to find a concrete answer about that...

Right now there aren't standard spread for 90% of the meta.
Everyone is walking in the darkness trying to make the best spread possible to bring at the tournament.

Even last week, when you shitposters complained about the lack of different pokémon, most pokémon that weren't Nihilego had different sets.

Meta's too young to know what else you want. I have my team on showdown and whenever I need to adjust, I touch there first then EV train on cart. You may inject EVs if you're in a pinch, just don't tell the mutt.

there's a lot of old players who skipped 2016 because "they didn't like the format" and now they came back thinking they can still be the bigshots they were in earlier years without realising that 2016 was the ultimate level up for a lot of vgc players. Once you've gained the skill to consistently beat smeargle+xerneas cores some washed up vgc2015 player isn't going to beat you.

Well, Cybertron didn't skip 2016, he only pussied out of worlds in favor of commentating because "shit format, my chances of winning are low specially since I'm starting on day 1, I'll go for the safe thing that'll boost my youtuber popularity and gives me other benefits and stuff".

Cybertron is a good player but he always chokes right at the finish line. He's as popular as he is now because he was the first to exploit the VGC Youtuber niche that didn't exist until he stepped in.

It's a tiebreaker method.

It depends on how well your opponents did so basically there's 5 people who tied, the person who got lucky enough to get paired by opponents who also did well in the tourney will be the one winning the tiebreaker.

People don't like it because last year top cut started to be decided by x-2 results on swiss with everyone getting that making top cut and more importantly because it takes away the results from the hands of the players, it's not about their performance anymore, it's how others did what will decide if they will win or not the tiebreaker.

It's a perfectly acceptable and fair method to use to determining tie breakers. True it can punish you if your early opponents do badly but there's no perfect system. The real problem here is having an 8 man top cut for 549 players, 32 would have made much more sense and would have included most/all of the X-3s.

Can anyone here tell me what the Japanese route to Worlds is like? I heard in a video I watched about a year ago (I think it was Cybertron, might've been Baek) that they have their own system that's separate from the accumulation of CP that everyone else plays by and that it's more brutal to work your way up through it. There's qualifiers on every region.

On simpler terms, you have to win a premier challenge to qualify for a regional and then win that regional to become your region representative for nats and then whoever tops nats are the ones who get invites for world.

It's indeed pretty brutal. I have no idea why their system is so different from the rest of the world.

However there is nothing really good this time round that has been locked out besides like a few Skill Swap users, Wide Guard and Fake Out. Gamefreak dropped the ball hard in terms of new moves for the most part.

244 HP and 44 Def lets me survive against a Garchomp EQ after intimidate.

This, you CAN run a set where you go @Life Orb and then Nasty Plot on the turn they think you want to set up a TR but instead set up to sweep. But that only works on Showdown/BS because of the best of 3 format.

Considering how common this thing is, that's pretty sad. Why don't more people use Trace? I use Trace on mine on Showdown and it's a lot more beneficial than a fucking +1 Attack it usually gets.

Especially with Intimidate being so common, Lightningrod, even some terrains can be used to your advantage. At worst it doesn't do much, but I have had many games where I got an intimidate and managed to live trough shit I shouldn't have. Getting Beast Boost and boosting Sp.Def when it KOs something. Lightningrod is also a good one, not only do you get another re director, but it also gets a Sp.Atk boost.

Try it out Anons. It's better than Download.

Tapu Koko should have Protect. Volt Switch or HP Ice aren't that necessary since the latter doesn't even guarantee KOs on the things that threaten it such as Garchomp.

Marowak should have enough attack to guarantee it KOs any fully physically defensive Celesteela. Keep in mind that the more you invest in attack, the better return you get from Thick Club.

Mimikyu needs its IV and EVs fixed. No point having a 0 speed IV if you're investing speed EVs.

King's Rock is a terrible item.

Araquanid should probably have a -Speed nature if you're running Scald since you're just hurting your potential damage output.

So why is there so little redirection this year?

There's Clefairy/Clefable, Smeargle, Lucario, Parasect, Ariados and Butterfree for it. Most of these are pretty crappy but you'd think at least the first three I mentioned would see some use. What went wrong?

The first two don't stack well with the Tapus being Fairy-types and all, Clefairy and Smeargle don't generate nearly enough offensive pressure in a format where pretty much every mon needs to pull its weight in that regard.

Try to imagine that you are in the oponent position and think about why did they make a certain move.
Understand which of your pokemon is a threat to your opponent and based from that, guess their lead pokemons.

Sometimes discussion after battle can be helpful too.

Some top teams use the ninetales but it is only for aurora veil + icy wind. You don't actually use the hail to do anything and you limit the number of ice shitmons on your team to just that 1.

Wood hammer does more damage than superpower. As seen yesterday with tapu lele and raichu, double targeting and z moves are good options. Taunt, especially since you know they won't be running mental herb.

Most of them only run trick-room or recover, and I usually just roar before the trick room.
Is running taunt over roar better?
And just to recap, just double slam it with attack plus z-move?
