Why did we go back to children protagonist after the teenagers in BW, BW2 and XY?

The Pokémon Company gets most of its earnings from merchandise, not videogames. The entire thing, anime, videogame, movies, etc exists just to sell toys and plushies.

It's probably parents spending money on pokemon merchandise for their kids, if anything. I'm in my early twenties, I have disposable income, and the only thing I buy is one pokemon game per year like you said. That and the $5 annual subscription to the bank. GameFreak and The Pokemon Company aren't exactly turning a huge profit off of all the people like me.

No. The game protagonists aren't even 10, they're 11 at the youngest (Gen 1, 7, and arguably 4). Gen 5 and 6 are mid to late teens.

No, they're actually around 14-16. The "older" protags are in Gens 5 and 6 (barring ORAS). Everyone else is 11-12.

I wish they'd at least give the option between "kid" and "teen" appearances. I know they'll probably never have an adult option but I'd rather play as a ~17 year old than an 11 year old
