There was also a steady trickle of gen 2 Pokémon revealed at the height of Pokémania. That's why most people lump in gen 2 as part of the franchise's mania phase. I saw all four of the first movies that got theatrical releases and the theatre was just about as packed for Pokémon 2000 as it was for The First Movie, considerably less packed for Pokémon 3, and virtually empty of Pokémon 4ever, if that's any indication of trends among normies. I'd say the craze died out in 2001 and most normies know at least a couple of gen 2 Pokémon.
The babies, Lugia, Entei, and the starters have considerable normie appeal. Some of the obscure ones that were harder to get less so. I don't think a lot of normies would know about Smeargle, Sneasel, Houndoom, Misdreavous, or Politoed.
