It's even weirder at the end where Lillie leaves. You even run after her with Kukui to the end of the dock and you still have that psycho slasher smile.

They want the main character to be a blank slate that you can impart your own identity onto.
If they reacted different from how you would, that wouldn't be right.
They haven't gotten jrpg enough to prompt you to express an emotion just yet, give it another generation.
