The anime is not any more real than the games. None of it ever happened.

Feelings don't win fights. Even the affection stat (which didn't exist at the time Karen said that line) is ultimately just a number you raise by performing certain actions in the game repeatedly, it's not substantially different from grinding.
The game cannot detect whether you, the player in real life, think of the pokémon as a true friend or just a bunch of data. You could HATE your pokémon from the bottom of your heart, and as long as the data says it's strong, that's how it will be in battle.

What she's saying is simple. On a regular game playthrough, if you actually choose to not pick Pokemon you wanna play just because they aren't competitively viable, you're an autistic asshole. It's like being that guy who actually tries to get good IVs/natures and EV trains all his pokemon before the postgame. Even if the postgame has additional mechanics introduced that greatly reduces the difficulty of EV trainins, these autists will still spend hours EV training every mon before the fifth gym.

If you wanna bring this into real life, it's easily applicable. If you bring your team of OU smogonmons you don't even like to do a casual battle against IRL friends, odds are you are an autistic asshole obsessed with winning. If you are specifically playing in a competitive environment, then naturally the above doesn't apply. Nobody will complain about someone using a bunch of broken mons in the VGC, people go there knowing full well its just the same 4 pokemon used every battle.

well what i do every gen is i look at a pokemon's stats and if i see that theyre good i put them in my team and try to fit them in with other pokemon i find via the same method.

it always works pretty well, and i grow attached to them more and more as the game's lifespan progresses because i both like their design and their stats.

so its possible to use pokemon you like AND have success competitively.

It worded shittily but she's not saying there aren't strong or weak Pokemon. She's saying you shouldn't care about those things and should try to win with your favs. That's cool, it's a respectable way. But it's moralfaggotry. Feel good. Spooky shit. It's not "selfish" to value strength (there are definitely people, even in the world of Pokemon, who like certain Pokemon because of their actual or perceived strength) or take it into consideration, especially if your goal is to actually win. And not some moral/personal victory but actual victory.

The spirit behind the quote is indeed admirable, but it's narrow. The other quotes in here are more helpful and considerate. Then again, it was never supposed to be analyzed like this. She was communicating the theme of the game that love for Pokemon should transcend consideration of strong/weak. The selfishness she speaks of is Team Rocket only caring about strength/usefulness and the mindset Silver developed out of to become a more loving and better trainer. So at least don't lose that spirit.

It would be ludicrous to imagine otherwise, as if you could win a given battle in a given playthrough of the game while simultaneously losing the exact same battle in "the pokémon universe" because what happens in the game somehow isn't what "really" happens.
There are pokémon with objectively better base stats than others. Karen was factually incorrect in the continuity she inhabited.

I do have many favourites in higher tiers, so i just use them, but it still feels kinda sad that you can't use certain one against other players.
Case in point: Aurorus is one of my all time favourite mons. Too bad it's so bad it's unusable even in NU
